Urban Sketching

Draw the world as you find it — cafes, streets, strangers — in a pocket notebook.

Urban Sketching

What it actually is

Urban sketching is drawing on location, from life, in the time you actually have. The whole point is loose, imperfect drawings made in public — not gallery art. It travels in a coat pocket, turns a coffee break into practice, and quietly builds a visual diary of where you've been.

Reality check

⏱ Time

10–20 min per sketch. You can do it in the gaps of a normal day.

↗ Learning curve

Humbling at first, fast after. Volume matters more than talent.

⬚ Space

Zero. A notebook and a pen live in your bag.

Real costs

Three honest budgets

Free $0
  • Any notebook and a pen you already own — genuinely start here
Starter kit Under $30
  • One waterproof fineliner or a cheap fountain pen
  • A pocket sketchbook with decent paper
All in Under $100
  • A small travel watercolor pan set
  • A couple of waterbrushes
  • A hardcover watercolor sketchbook

We always show the cheapest honest way to start first — the $0 option comes before anything you'd buy.

Your first 30 minutes

Do this today

  1. 1 Grab any notebook and a pen. Go to a window or a cafe.
  2. 2 Pick one object — a cup, a chair — and draw it without lifting the pen much.
  3. 3 Draw it again, faster, in under two minutes.
  4. 4 Add three lines of background. Done. That's a sketch.

7-day starter plan

Your first week

Day 1 Draw your coffee cup from three angles.
Day 2 Sketch the view out one window for ten minutes.
Day 3 Draw a stranger's shoes (less intimidating than faces).
Day 4 Fill one page with quick 30-second gesture sketches of people.
Day 5 Sketch a building — just the big shapes, ignore detail.
Day 6 Add one wash of color or shadow to an old sketch.
Day 7 Do a full cafe scene: object, person, background, color.

Questions people ask

Do I need to be good at drawing to start urban sketching?

No. The entire practice is built around loose, imperfect drawings done quickly from life. Volume builds skill far faster than waiting until you 'can draw'.

What's the cheapest way to start urban sketching?

Any notebook and pen you already own. A dedicated fineliner and pocket sketchbook costs under $30 when you're ready.
